Aug 09, 2023

8:00am - 1:15pm

Next up is Big Sky’s Beehive Basin. This hike was selected as one of the “Top 10 Hikes in the World" by Austin Adventure Company and every bit of the hike is just spectacular. We’ll cross through lovely meadows, enjoy views of Lone Mountain, and end up at at little lake at 9,278’ in a cirque (aka “basin”), at the base of gorgeous, jagged peaks.

Date: Aug. 9th

RT distance: 6.7 miles

Estimated Hiking time: about 3 1/2 hours plus a stop at the lake

Degree of difficulty: Moderate

Elevation gain: 1,459’ (we hike from 7,819' to about 9,278’)

Shade/Sun: Mostly in the sun; not much shade

Meeting Place and Time: The Market/Sidewinders area on Huffine. From town, go past the Mall, then turn right on Boardwalk (just past Sidewinders), then right again into the parking lot. Meet in the SE corner, closest to Bozeman. Note: the bathroom at The Market” will probably not be open.) Be ready to leave at 7:00 a.m. (Why so early? The “caravan” will stop at the Wilson Hotel in Big Sky’s Town Center to use the bathrooms. Also, there is road construction on Lone Peak Drive (Mt #64), which is the only way to access the trail. The Montana Department of Transportation says to expect a delay of 15 minutes each way. So, it will be necessary to leave Bozeman at 7 in order to get to the trailhead (and find parking) before 9:00.

Miscellaneous: Sunscreen is a must for this hike, as is ample water. There are a couple of short, steep, rocky areas where poles are useful, if you’re so inclined. You might want to bring a small snack to eat at the lake. Bring lots of film : )

Lunch: When we’re done with the hike, everyone is invited to my condo, just a couple of miles away, for lunch.

Back in Bozeman: Probably about 3:30 p.m.
